The Base Nut Or Sleeve For My Tub/Shower Is Defective

The base nut and sleeve are used to install a cartridge onto a tub/shower valve body.

If water is leaking from the base nut or the sleeve:

  1. Unscrew the base nut, brass adjusting ring (if included) and sleeve from the body. Examine the threads on the brass body, sleeve, brass adjusting ring (if included) and base nut to make sure that the threads are not damaged.
  2. Install the sleeve by carefully threading it over the cartridge on to the valve body, making sure it is not cross threaded. Tighten with a wrench that allows 10 to 14 ft-lbs of torque.
  3. Hand tighten the adjusting ring (if included) and base nut to the sleeve.

If the leak persists, a replacement base nut and sleeve may be required. Furthermore, if after replacing the sleeve and base nut the leak persists, a replacement cartridge may be necessary.

If the sleeve is the older version, wherein it includes the brass adjusting ring, a one piece sleeve is suggested as a replacement.

Tub and Shower with Ball Valve Assembly

If water is leaking from the trim cap ( under the handle)

  1. Remove the handle and brass adaptor.  Use the adjusting wrench tool to remove the brass adjusting ring
  2. Insert the wrench in two of the notches and rotate counterclockwise.
  3. Once the adjusting ring is removed, remove the trim cap and lock nut by unscrewing the trim cap counter-clockwise. If the trim cap is difficult to remove, a rubber glove can be wrapped around it for a better grip.
  4. Install the sleeve by carefully threading it over the cartridge onto the valve body, making sure it is not cross threaded.
  5. Examine the threads on the brass body, trim cap and brass adjusting ring (if included)  to make sure that the threads are not damaged. If the threads are damaged, replace the part.
  6. If not, hand tighten the trim cap and use the wrench to tighten up the adjusting ring.
  7. If the leak persists, replace the ball valve assembly.
