Winterizing gravity toilets can prevent plumbing damage from frozen water. Follow the below steps:
- Shut the supply line off
- Flush the toilet until the tank is empty
- Plunge as much water down and out of the toilet bowl as possible
- Pour non-toxic RV antifreeze into the tank until it starts to show up on the toilet bowl. Pour about 1/2 gallon of non-toxic RV antifreeze into the toilet bowl.
- Plunge the non-toxic RV antifreeze down and out of the toilet bowl. This is the most important. You need to get antifreeze down into the trap at the bottom of the toilet. If you don’t and it’s full of water, it can freeze during the winter and crack your porcelain toilet.
NOTE: If you have a basement toilet and the water supply comes down in the wall from the story above then you need to remove the supply line at the shut-off valve. If you don’t water, it can sit in the lowest area, which is the shut-off valve and will freeze and break.
To put your winterizing gravity toilets back to service after the cold season, follow the below steps:
- Turn on the water, flush the supply line into a bucket. Then close the water.
- Reconnect the supply line to the fill valve, hand tighten only.
- Flush the toilet, this will flush out the antifreeze.
