How do I clean the toilet, toilet seat and bowl rim holes?

Cleaning Toilets:

  • Clean the surface of your Vitreous China toilet with a mild cleaner/ soap with a soft cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, abrasive pads, pumice stone or steel wool to clean Vitreous China surfaces as it can result in scratching and dulling the surface.
  • Do not use In-Tank drop-in toilet bowl cleaners containing Chlorine or Bleach.
  • Do not expose plastic trim parts to strong oxidizing agents, chlorine, or Acid levels lower than 5.0 pH.  Most bowl/tile cleaners contain such agents.
  • The use of in-tank drop-in cleaners containing chlorine or bleach can cause tank component failure and damage. OUR WARRANTY EXCLUDES SUCH FAILURE.
  • Use of in-tank drop-in cleaners containing chlorine or bleach voids Fluidmaster Warranty will result in damage to tank components and may cause flooding and property damage.

Cleaning Toilet Seats:

  • Clean the surface of your toilet seat with a mild cleaner/soap and soft cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, abrasive pads, or wool to clean the toilet seat surfaces as it can result in scratching and dulling of the surface.

Cleaning the Bowl Rim Holes:

  • The rim holes are small openings under the rim of the bowl.
If these jets become clogged, your toilet may not flush properly.
  • Flush the toilet and watch how the water flows, it should swirl.
If it comes straight down through the rim holes, or if the water sprays away from the bowl at all, the holes need cleaning.
  • Inspect the rim openings with a mirror. If they are clogged with mineral deposits, first empty the tank and bowl using the following procedure:
  1. Turn off the water to the tank (at the wall supply) and flush the toilet.
  2. Fill a large bucket with 1 gallon of water and pour that water into the toilet bowl.
  3. Use a hanger or a paper clip as a "pipe cleaner" to clean out the holes at the rim.

If the scale that exists is too hard to remove, try this trick to soften things up:
    • Fill the tank with 1 gallon of pure vinegar (any kind). The vinegar travels from the tank into the rim of the toilet. Let it sit there for as long as possible (24 hours is good enough to clean the rim holes).

Regular Maintenance:

  • Occasionally inspect the flapper. The rubber or silicone seal should retain its original shape and consistency. If the flapper or silicone seal becomes hard or brittle, it should be replaced.
  • The flapper chain or strap should have a slight slack when the flapper is closed. Adjust it if necessary.
  • The opening where the flapper seals should be smooth and clear of debris or mineral/scale buildup. If not, it may be a poor seal and water may leak through and down the drain - wasting water and money. If there are any deposits on that opening, try to scrape them off with your hands, a sponge/rag, or lightly rub with steel wool to reestablish the smooth opening.
