For a Two-Piece Toilet
- Remove the tank lid
- Shut off the water by turning the shut-off valve clockwise
- Drain as much water out of the tank as possible by holding the flush lever down until the toilet is completely flushed.
- Sponge or toilet out any remaining water in the tank. A shop vac also works well.
- Disconnect the water supply or hose to the tank
- Disconnect the Flapper chain from the tank lever arm
- Disconnect the refill tube attached to the top of the overflow pipe
- Underneath the tank, unscrew the bolts that hold the tank to the bowl. You may need to spray them with some penetrating oil first before trying to loosen them.
- Reach in tank with long slotted screw driver to keep tank bolt from turning while loosening nuts under tank with an adjustable wrench. Remove tank bolts.
- Lift the tank off the bowl and set it aside on a towel.
- Underneath the tank, remove the tank-to-bowl gasket and unscrew the locknut holding the flush valve to the tank using a plumber’s wrench. Disconnect the fill valve tube from the flush valve. Remove old flush valve.
- Install the new flush valve the same way you removed the old one, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Reconnect the fill valve tube and reinstall the tank-to-bowl gasket.
- Once installed, reattach the tank to the bowl with tank bolts.
- Reattach the flapper chain to the flush arm
- Reattach the fill tube to the overflow pipe
- Reconnect the water supply to the tank
- Turn on the water, test the new flush valve and check for leaks.
