How to test toilet flapper for a leak?

If you have a single flush toilet using a flapper with chain, before starting the following test, verify if there is sufficient slack on the flapper chain and if the flapper chain is properly hooked to the tank lever. When pressing down the tank lever, the flapper chain should lift the flapper fully.

Follow the below instructions to test the toilet flapper for leaking:

  1. To test the toilet flapper, pour a bit of food coloring into the toilet tank water.

  2. Check back in 15 minutes to see if the water in the toilet bowl has changed color.

  3. If it has, then most likely your toilet flapper needs to be replaced.
If this does not fix the leak after replacing the flapper, you may need to replace the entire flush valve (could be a single flush valve or dual flush as shown below).

Single Flush (flapper is a separate part)

Dual Flush (flapper is part of the flush valve)
