How Do I Install or Replace The Diverter For My Three-Handle Tub/Shower Faucet?

This article will explain how to replace the diverter for a three-handle tub & shower faucet.

To replace the diverter, you must:

  1. Remove the old diverter
  2. Install the new diverter
  3. Test for leaks

Please Note: Before doing any work on your faucet, please shut off the water supply for the faucet.

Once the water is turned off, you are ready to begin.

 

Step 1 - Remove the old diverter

  1. Using a pair of adjustable pliers, remove the threaded sleeve assembly by turning counter-clockwise.

  2. Remove the stem extension. To do so, pull the stem extension off of the cartridge assembly.

  3. Remove the cartridge by holding the stem of the cartridge and pulling it away from the faucet body.

Step 2 - Install the new diverter

  1. Slide the diverter into the faucet body. To properly orient the cartridge, rotate the cartridge so that the stopper is on the left side. Slide the cartridge into the faucet body so that the notches on the cartridge line up with the grooves on the faucet body.

    Slide the cartridge into the faucet body so that the notches on the cartridge line up with the grooves on the faucet body.

  2. Re-install the stem extension. If the two pieces of the stem extension have separated, connect them by lining up the matching notches.

  3. Re-install the threaded sleeve with a pair of adjustable pliers. To avoid over-tightening the threaded sleeve, hand tighten the sleeve and then use the adjustable pliers to apply a quarter turn. Approximately 10-14 lbs of torque are required to properly install the lock nut.

Step 3 - Test for leaks

  1. Once all of the parts are re-installed, turn on the water supply to the faucet. Turn the faucet on and allow the water to run for approximately 10 minutes. Watch for any leaks. If you notice water leaking from the cartridge assembly, turn the faucet off, tighten the threaded sleeve and test again.
