A diverter is a valve that directs the water to a specific outlet. In a tub/shower arrangement, the diverter will direct the water to the showerhead or the tub filler spout. A kitchen with a spray faucet has a diverter that actuates when the user presses or releases the lever on the vegetable spray. Gerber Roman tub faucets with personal spray systems operate in the same manner. Kitchen faucets with pull-out or pull-down spouts usually feature wands with both aerated stream and a more powerful spray pattern. The diverter to control this is part of the wand assembly.
If you add a hand shower to your existing shower, you may install a diverter on the shower arm; the diverter will direct the water out of the showerhead or to the hose that attaches to the hand shower.
For larger custom showers, the owner may install a simple transfer valve between the volume control and the individual shower fitting system (overhead shower, hand shower, body spray). Gerber offers a diverter that will control water to up to three shower systems with either shared flow, or separate flow control. Visit the Gerber website for a full product lineup.
