How Do I Install A Ball Valve Assembly For A Lavatory Faucet?

This article will explain how to install a ball valve for a single-handle faucet.

To install a ball valve, you must:

1. Remove the old ball valve, as well as the seats and springs.
2. Install the new ball valve, seats and springs.
3. Test for leaks.

Please Note: Before doing any work on your faucet, please shut off the water supply for the faucet.

Once the water is turned off, you are ready to begin.

Step 1 - Remove the old ball valve, the seats and the springs.

• After you've removed the handle, remove the trim cap and locking nut by unscrewing the trim cap counter-clockwise. If the trim cap is difficult to remove, a rubber glove can be wrapped around it for a better grip.
  

• Hold the stem of the cartridge and lift the ball valve out of the faucet. The cam and cam packing will come out with the ball valve.
  

• Once the ball valve is removed, look inside the faucet body and locate the seats and springs.
  

• Remove the seats and springs. If you cannot remove the seats and springs with your fingers, use a pair of needle nose pliers or a straightened paper clip to remove them.
  

Step 2 - Install the new ball valve, seats and springs.

• Install the new seats and springs. To do so, insert the spring into the faucet body. The larger end of the spring goes in first. Next, install the rubber seat over the spring. Make sure that you install both sets of seats and springs.
  
  

• Insert the ball into the faucet body. To do so, locate the locator pin in the faucet body, and locate the straight, narrow opening on the ball valve. Install the ball valve so that the locator pin is lined up with the opening on the ball valve.
  
  

• Insert the cam and cam packing. Ensure that the cam is properly installed by lining up the tab on the cam with the opening in the faucet body.
  
  

• Install the trim cap. Once installed, tighten the lock nut onto the ball valve.
  

Step 3 - Test for leaks

• Once all of the parts are re-installed, turn on the water supply for the faucet and turn the faucet on and off. If you notice that water is leaking from the ball valve assembly, tighten the lock nut and test again.
