If you've determined that the pressure balancing spool for your faucet is defective, try cleaning and re-installing the pressure balancing spool.
To clean the pressure balancing spool:
- Remove it from the valve body. To remove the spool, unscrew the brass nut counter-clockwise using a pair of pliers or an adjustable wrench. The size of the nut is 5/8".
- Once the nut is loose, pull out the pressure balance spool, then separate the two pieces. If the piston ( the inner piece) is seized, you can tap the whole part onto a hard surface and try to dislodge it from the cylinder.
- Soak the pieces in equal parts vinegar and warm water for 30-45 minutes.
- Lubricate the piston with vegetable oil and re-install the pressure balancing spool in the shower valve.
If the issue is not resolved or if you are unable to dislodge the piston from the cylinder, the pressure balancing spool may need to be replaced.
