This article will explain how to install a compression cartridge for a two handle tub / shower faucet.
To install a compression cartridge, you must:
- Remove the old cartridge.
- Disassemble the cartridge, stem extension and threaded sleeve.
- Install the stem extension and threaded sleeve on the cartridge.
- Install the new cartridge.
- Test for leaks.
Please Note: Before doing any work on your faucet, please shut off the water supply for the faucet.
Once the water is turned off, you are ready to begin.
Step 1 – Remove the old cartridge
b. To remove the cartridge from the valve, use adjustable pliers, or a socket wrench of H 13/16" (H20 mm) and at least 2 3/4" (70 mm) in depth. Twist counter-clockwise to remove.
c. Hold the stem of the cartridge and pull out until the cartridge is completely removed from the faucet body.
Step 2 – Disassemble the cartridge, stem extension and threaded sleeve
a. Begin by removing the set screw that holds the stem extension in place. Remove the stem extension
b. Remove the threaded sleeve. To do so you will need two pairs of adjustable pliers. Using one pair of adjustable pliers, hold the cartridge in place. Using the second pair of adjustable pliers, unscrew the threaded sleeve counter-clockwise until it is completely removed.
Step 3 – Install the new stem extension and threaded sleeve
a. Screw the threaded sleeve onto the cartridge assembly. Use two pairs of adjustable pliers to secure the pieces together.
b. Install the stem extension using the set screw to attach it to the cartridge
Step 4 – Install the new cartridge
a. Place the cartridge in the faucet body and using the socket wrench or adjustable pliers, turn clockwise to screw the cartridge into the faucet body. To avoid over-tightening the cartridge, hand tighten the cartridge, and then use the adjustable pliers to apply a quarter turn. Approximately 10-14 lbs of torque are required to properly install the cartridge.
Step 5 – Test for leaks
a. Once all of the parts are re-installed, turn on the water supply for the faucet and turn the faucet on and off. If you notice that water is leaking from the cartridge assembly, tighten the cartridge and test again.
